Baking Arts Day 12

So the end of Baking Arts has come and passed. I’ve had fun and would highly recommend anyone interested in learning the basics of baking to take this course. Chef Jo (Yasmin Johaadien) was very friendly and helpful. She also has a pretty cool resume having worked for Gordon Ramsay and is now working at Buca. Some of the guys from the Black Hoof tweeted about one of the desserts that she’s made at Buca called a blood tart – yep, you read that right, it’s a tart made with pig’s blood…blows the mind! Here’s the tweet.

But back to the last day of Baking Arts. We made manly strawberry shortcake. I say ‘manly’ because I tried to think of a way to make strawberry shortcake more masculine but there really is no way except to call it manly, which it’s not. This cake is a lot of work, just as much work as the black forest cake and with as many steps. Is it worth it in the end, yep, I would say it is. As I’ve said in the past about the effort involved to make black forest cake, I would make strawberry shortcake again but that person would have to be pretty damn special.

Here are the pics:

While the cakes are baking dip the strawberries in coating chocolate:

Slice the cake in thirds then layer on whipped cream and sliced strawberies:

Coat with almonds and here’s the final product:

And yeah, it tasted as good as it looked!
