My last day living in downtown

When we first moved into this condo my mom told me about a Filipino tradition where the first things that are brought into a new home is uncooked rice (bigas) and salt (asin).  It seems fitting that the last things that I moved out of the condo are bigas and asin.

This past month has been difficult.  Sometimes moving can be a time of excitement, like when you finally strike out on your own and leave your parent’s house.  Sometimes moving can be a challenge, like when life throws a right hook and knocks you back to where you started.  But the common thread for whatever reason you move is that there is change happening in your life.

We had moved everything out of the condo on a Saturday morning and for two nights afterward I slept on a yoga mat in a sleeping bag on the hardwood.  Sleeping on hardwood is tough on your back and if you sleep on your side, forget about it!  I think sleeping on the hardwood helped me get some closure, it drove home the fact the condo is no longer a home.

One of the things that I will surely miss is the view of the Toronto skyline; fitting that the skies are grey to reflect my mood.

So my downtown life is at an end and I’m back in the ‘burbs under my parent’s roof.  Moving back in with my parent’s is a humbling experience, it isn’t what I want but I’m grateful that they’re willing and able to take me back in.  Hopefully this is a temporary setback and it won’t be for too long.
