In the genre of Classical music Vivaldi’s Four Seasons Concertos are at the top of my list. While doing my research leading up to the show I discovered that technically these concertos are classified as Baroque and not Classical music. I know that I’ve said this before but there is no substitution for listening to live music. There’s nuance and depth that you can hear that just isn’t there in a recording, and believe me my hearing is not good.
This is only my second time going to the symphony so you’ll need to forgive my ignorance. Comparing this experience to Gustav Mahler’s Resurrection, immediately I noticed that there was no conductor and the number of instruments was significantly less. The show was divided by an intermission. The first part consisted of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons concertos which were performed magnificently. After the intermission they reset the stage for Philip Glass’ American Four Seasons where they introduce an electronic keyboard. I’ll be the first to admit that I’m no expert in music, but I do know what I like. In my opinion Vivaldi’s Four Seasons is a masterpiece from beginning to end, so comparing Vivaldi to Glass’ American Four Seasons really isn’t fair. Glass’ American Four Seasons had its moments but when there was a lull in music I was fighting the sweet sleep. Maybe it’s before it’s time, maybe I’m just ignorant of good music, all I can say is that Vivaldi is a tough act to follow. I encourage you to have a listen and decide for yourself.
Here’s a pic of where I sat and the set up of the stage.
